 Our score

**7.8** /10

SuperTuxKart is a good Android choice when freedom, offline access, and breadth matter more than glossy presentation. Wheel and tilt touch schemes make every mode playable without extra hardware, but the project and independent reports agree that touch is harder to master than a gamepad. Lower settings can keep the racer useful on modest phones, while demanding tracks and a current one-device text-rendering report justify testing before committing to a long session. Choose it for free solo races, local-network play, or controller-based sessions; skip it if you want effortless touch steering, consistently modern art, or predictable high settings across phones.

The essentials

## What is SuperTuxKart?

Install SuperTuxKart on Android if you want a complete offline kart racer with varied modes, gamepad support, and no ads or in-app purchases. Its 21 official tracks, story challenges, battle events, soccer, egg hunts, and add-ons offer far more than a disposable free download. The tradeoffs are inconsistent visual polish, touchscreen steering that takes practice, and performance that can vary sharply by track and device. This score covers the official Android edition. GamesRanker has not played version 1.5; the assessment combines a named Android review, direct player reports, and current project and store documentation.

### Why it stands out

* Races, story challenges, battles, soccer, egg hunts, multiplayer, and add-ons provide real variety
* The complete Android game is free with no active ads or microtransactions
* Offline single-player and local-network options do not depend on a global account
* Gamepad support gives serious players a better alternative to the touch overlay

### What to consider

* Touch steering and simultaneous item actions take more practice than a physical controller
* Demanding tracks or high graphical settings can run poorly on weaker Android hardware
* Track, character, and interface art lacks one consistently polished visual standard
* One current version 1.5 phone report shows menu text rendering badly enough to block configuration

Is it for you?

## Should you download it?

 Best for

Android players who want a substantial offline racer without ads or spending pressure, enjoy experimenting with several modes, and can use a gamepad or spend time learning touch steering. It also suits families or groups with controllers for local play.

 Think twice if

You expect console-level visual consistency, need effortless one-handed controls, or want high settings to run predictably on an older phone. Mini Metro is calmer and more touch-native; Mindustry offers a deeper free and open-source planning loop instead of reflex racing.

Score details

## Why SuperTuxKart scored 7.8

We score both the game itself and how well this version works on a phone or tablet.

### Fun

Twenty-one official tracks, story challenges, normal races, time trials, battle variants, soccer, egg hunts, Grand Prix events, replays, and community add-ons give the free racer unusual range. FGRP found the difficulty curve and basic driving fun, but also described handling that takes time to learn and presentation quality that varies between tracks and characters.

**8.0**

### Phone experience

The complete game runs natively on Android, works offline for solo play, offers wheel and tilt steering, and accepts gamepads. The project says touchscreen controls are more challenging because thumbs handle most actions, and both FGRP and Santaella found a learning cost. Same-device multiplayer also needs external inputs on Android.

**6.6**

### Value

The base game, story, competitive modes, multiplayer, and add-on access are free, with no active ads or microtransactions. A donation can provide early access to two tracks intended for SuperTuxKart Evolution, but the project says those tracks will enter a future free release; the current Android game does not sell progression or remove ads for a fee.

**9.8**

### Performance

FGRP found low settings generally usable on weaker hardware, yet measured about 15 FPS on Black Forest and found higher graphical levels unplayable on that device. Version 1.5 adds a benchmark and mobile resolution scaling, but a February 2026 one-phone demonstration shows severely broken menu text. With no representative current Android benchmark, performance remains device-dependent.

**6.6**

### Ads & purchases

There are no active ads, microtransactions, paid boosts, or purchased race advantages. Offline modes need no account. Global multiplayer uses an optional account; Google Play says the app may collect personal information, declares no third-party sharing, and offers encryption and deletion. That limited account data is disclosed without changing the exceptionally fair game economy.

Quick answers

## Common questions about SuperTuxKart on mobile

Straight answers about price, content, offline play, controls, and compatibility.

Is SuperTuxKart available on iPhone and iPad? _+_

A separate SuperTuxKart build is live in the US App Store. The project says former team member Devee published it and describes iOS as unofficial, while Android is one of the team's official binaries. This review therefore scores only the official Android edition; do not assume every performance detail applies to the iOS build.

Can SuperTuxKart be played offline on Android? _+_

Yes for single-player modes, and Google Play labels the app offline. Local-network multiplayer can work without internet when devices share the same network. Global servers require a connection and an online account, while downloading add-ons also needs a connection. Download optional content before traveling.

Does SuperTuxKart support controllers on Android? _+_

Yes. The project lists a gamepad with at least six buttons as an optional input, and Android player reports confirm gamepad use. Touch remains available through steering-wheel or tilt schemes. FGRP reports that same-device multiplayer on Android needs external keyboards or gamepads.

Does SuperTuxKart contain ads or in-app purchases? _+_

The project and Google Play describe it as free without active ads or microtransactions. Donors can receive early access to two tracks planned for SuperTuxKart Evolution, but the project says those tracks will become free in a future release. The Android game does not sell faster progression or an ad-removal purchase.

How much storage does SuperTuxKart need on Android? _+_

The project currently recommends 800 MB of disk space and at least 1 GB of free RAM. Google Play's public page did not show one fixed device download estimate, so leave additional room for Play delivery, extracted assets, updates, and any community add-ons you choose to download.

Will SuperTuxKart run well on an older Android phone? _+_

Android 5.0 is the stated minimum, but minimum compatibility does not promise smooth high settings. FGRP found low settings mostly usable on weaker hardware while a demanding track fell to about 15 FPS. Use version 1.5's benchmark, lower render resolution and effects, and test the tracks you care about before relying on the game.

Is SuperTuxKart 1.5 still being updated? _+_

The project FAQ says a 1.5.1 maintenance release is planned for fixes, localization improvements, and small features. It does not plan active 1.x development after that, although the account, add-on, and server-directory services are expected to remain available. SuperTuxKart Evolution is described as a separate future game.

Version 1.5 is the current stable release. The project FAQ says 1.5.1 is planned for bug fixes, localization improvements, and minor features; no active 1.x development is planned afterward, while online services are expected to remain available. SuperTuxKart Evolution is a separate future game.

Android supports gamepads, and the project recommends at least six buttons. Touch offers steering-wheel and tilt schemes, but the project says touchscreen mastery is harder. Same-device multiplayer on Android requires external keyboards or gamepads according to FOSS Android's test.

The exact org.supertuxkart.stk edition has a live Install action in the US Google Play store and is the official Android build scored here. A separate SuperTuxKart app is live in the US App Store, but the project says it was published by former team member Devee and classifies iOS as an unofficial downstream edition. This page does not apply the Android score to that build.

 Testing evidence

## Independent mobile tests

### FGRP

[Read FOSS Android assessment ↗](https://fossandroid.blogspot.com/2025/05/supertuxkart.html)

 Android

Test device**Low-end Android phone; exact model not disclosed** Android version not disclosed

Test scope Published May 19, 2025 and updated June 9, 2025 after evaluating version 1.4, including controls, modes, several graphics settings, multiplayer, and add-ons. The article also records observations from an interview respondent; play duration was not stated. Version: 1.4

FGRP found the wheel and accelerometer schemes understandable, the handling somewhat slippery until learned, and the mode and add-on selection substantial. Low settings generally ran well on the tested weaker hardware, but Black Forest fell to about 15 FPS and high graphics became unplayable on that device.

### Samuel Santaella

[Read Named Google Play review ↗](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.supertuxkart.stk&gl=US&hl=en)

 Android

Test device**Phone model not disclosed in the review** Android version not disclosed

Test scope Google Play review published October 1, 2021. The exact build and play duration were not stated, so it is used for durable handling, mode, add-on, and input observations rather than current stability.

Santaella described the driving as solid and valued the freely downloadable tracks and seven modes. The reviewer found touchscreen racing unintuitive and specifically welcomed gamepad support.

### Beautiful Angel Blossom

[Read Version 1.5 Android issue demonstration ↗](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvKaUFzGhFQ)

 Android

Test device**Android phone; model not disclosed** Android version not disclosed

Test scope Video published February 22, 2026 showing version 1.5 menus, add-on screens, and races on one phone. Test duration and full settings were not disclosed. Version: 1.5

The video shows badly broken menu text that makes configuration and add-on selection difficult on that phone, while standard races remain playable. The creator explicitly allows that other phones may work, so this is a compatibility warning rather than evidence of a universal 1.5 defect.

Testing is credited to the named reviewers. GamesRanker reviewed their findings for this assessment.
