 Our score

**7.2** /10

OpenTTD is a good fit for patient Android players who would rather learn a full logistics system than settle for a short puzzle. Its free solo mode, network multiplayer, custom content, and long-lived saves offer substantial value. The price of that depth is a desktop-derived interface: precise rail construction and crowded dialogs frustrate some phone players, though others report satisfying play after adjustment. A tablet or stylus may reduce the input burden, but we have no GamesRanker device test or representative performance benchmark. Start with the free installation and a small map; choose Mini Metro if direct touch design matters more than building an entire transport company.

The developer-published explanatory overlay in one capture was retained.

The essentials

## What is OpenTTD?

Download pelya's OpenTTD Android port if you want to design railway, road, air, and ship networks with the depth of the desktop transport simulator and no entry price. It is a demanding phone game rather than a simplified mobile tycoon: construction toolbars, vehicle windows, and exact tile choices can make a small screen tiring. The US Google Play app is live, but its listed update is from May 2025 while the separate core OpenTTD project has reached version 15.3. GamesRanker has not played this edition; this assessment combines direct Android user reports, a documented device issue, project guidance, and the current US store listing.

### Why it stands out

* Full rail, road, air, and ship network management on a free Android app
* Solo play, AI opponents, multiplayer, and custom content provide different goals
* No ads reported for the checked Play package and no paid progression gate
* Base graphics, interface scale, and other settings give patient players room to adapt

### What to consider

* Small toolbars and overlapping dialogs make accurate construction tiring on phones
* The learning curve is steep and the Android package has weak in-app onboarding
* A documented device-specific scaling problem can hide a rail control until settings are adjusted
* The Play package's listed update trails newer core OpenTTD releases

Is it for you?

## Should you download it?

 Best for

Android players who enjoy patient logistics planning, have room for precise controls on a larger phone or tablet, and want the full transport-company sandbox without ads or an upfront purchase.

 Think twice if

You want a quick tutorial, effortless thumb input, or a guaranteed current match with the desktop release. Mini Metro offers a cleaner train-network puzzle designed for touch; Mindustry is a different free resource-chain challenge; Unciv is better if turn-based empire decisions appeal more than transport timetables.

Score details

## Why OpenTTD scored 7.2

We score both the game itself and how well this version works on a phone or tablet.

### Fun

Rail, road, air, and sea routes can serve changing towns and industries; vehicle purchase details, map construction, AI competition, and optional add-ons support long-term planning. Samuel Lim reports satisfaction from managing the exact Android edition, while Fatema Nabi values its complex rail networks. Her complaint about weak onboarding and the core game's extensive manual make this a deep but steep simulation.

**8.6**

### Phone experience

The port documents two-finger map scrolling and edge-drag dialog closing, but keeps many overlapping construction and vehicle windows. Denver Beek and Paul Manzella found phone input confusing or too small, and a Galaxy S22 report documents a railway control clipped by default scaling. Samuel Lim found the controls easy, so the problem is serious for some players rather than universal. No native gamepad support was verified.

**5.8**

### Value

The US Play package is free to install, AppBrain reports no ads, and the game's solo transport loop does not require a purchased unlock. Its route-building systems, optional AI opponents, online matches, and in-game add-on catalogue offer considerable range. A base graphics download and a learning investment are real setup costs, but not a paid progression gate.

**9.7**

### Performance

Two 2025 port reports identify a Galaxy S22 screen-scaling problem with a settings workaround and one Android 14 player's inability to import PC saves. Neither establishes how often those failures occur or how current maps run across devices. GamesRanker has no measured frame-rate, battery, or large-map stability result; the cautious score reflects the documented compatibility limits and that performance remains unverified, not widespread failure.

**6.3**

### Ads & purchases

The exact Android package is offered free, AppBrain reports no ads, and Google Play's developer data-safety declaration says no data is collected or shared. Optional online multiplayer and downloaded content involve networking, but the solo transport simulation can be played without a competitive paid boost. The data declaration is publisher-reported rather than an independent privacy audit.

Quick answers

## Common questions about OpenTTD on mobile

Straight answers about price, content, offline play, controls, and compatibility.

Is the OpenTTD Android app the latest desktop version? _+_

Do not assume so. AppBrain identifies the checked Play package as 14.1.rev130, and Google Play lists its last update as May 8, 2025. The core OpenTTD site separately lists stable version 15.3. Compare the version shown on your own installed app with the project release notes before expecting a new desktop feature.

Can OpenTTD be played offline on Android? _+_

The solo transport game can run without an online opponent after its required base graphics are installed. The project says a base graphics set may need to be downloaded on first run, while optional add-ons and online multiplayer need a connection. Finish setup and test a local save offline before taking it on a trip.

Does OpenTTD on Android support a gamepad? _+_

Native gamepad support for this checked Play package was not verified. Google Play documents touch gestures and its latest update mentions hardware-mouse behavior. If a gamepad is essential, do not assume a desktop control option applies to this Android port; check the installed edition with your exact controller first.

Why do OpenTTD rail controls disappear at my screen edge? _+_

One Galaxy S22/Android 15 reporter found the default UI scale pushed the railway control into the rounded screen edge. The reporter said changing the scale in settings fixed that setup. Treat it as a device-specific possibility: change interface scale before assuming construction is unavailable, then report a reproducible failure to the Android port project.

How much storage does OpenTTD need on Android? _+_

AppBrain reports a 65.21 MB APK for the checked 14.1.rev130 package, but that is not a device-specific installed-size estimate. OpenTTD requires a separate base graphics set and can download optional sound, music, and add-ons. Leave extra space and complete the first-run downloads before testing offline play.

Is this OpenTTD edition in the US iPhone App Store? _+_

This review concerns the live org.openttd.sdl Android package. The core project's current download page does not offer an official iOS App Store build, and GamesRanker did not verify a live matching US iPhone edition. Do not treat a similarly named third-party port as the scored Android app.

Store snapshot

## What players are rating

**United States snapshot, September 15, 2026 :** On September 15, 2026, the US Google Play page showed a live Install action, 1M+ downloads, 49.9K aggregate reviews, a 4.1 aggregate rating, an Everyone rating with Users Interact, and May 8, 2025 as the last listed update. AppBrain separately estimated about 4.2K downloads in the prior 30 days and identified package 14.1.rev130. These interest signals helped choose coverage and did not affect the review score.

Download and space

AppBrain reports a 65.21 MB APK for package version 14.1.rev130, not a device-specific Google Play download estimate. OpenTTD also needs a base graphics set and may download optional sound, music, scenarios, or add-ons, so leave additional storage.

Device support

AppBrain lists Android 7.0 or later for the checked Play package. Google Play determines compatibility for a specific device; a minimum OS does not promise that all dialogs fit its screen or that large maps will run smoothly.

Age rating

Everyone with Users Interact on the US Google Play page.

Languages

English and community-translated OpenTTD languages are available. The Android listing links to a separate translation project, so translation coverage and menu completeness can vary by edition and version.

Details last checked

 September 15, 2026

The US Google Play page lists May 8, 2025 as this Android app's last update, and AppBrain identifies its package as 14.1.rev130. The core OpenTTD project separately lists 15.3 as its current stable release. Do not assume desktop release notes already apply to the Play build.

Native gamepad support for the checked Android package was not verified. The current Play update mentions a hardware-mouse fix; touch input is documented through two-finger scrolling and drag-to-edge dialog closing.

The exact org.openttd.sdl package had a live Install action in US Google Play on September 15, 2026. The core project's download page offers current desktop binaries but no official iOS App Store edition; this review does not score unrelated or previously listed iOS ports.

 Testing evidence

## Independent mobile tests

### Denver Beek

Test device**Phone model not disclosed** Android version not disclosed

Test scope March 26, 2021 Google Play review of the pelya Android edition; version, play duration, and device details were not disclosed. Used for the durable input tradeoff, not present-day stability.

Beek recommended the underlying PC port to players willing to learn it, while describing the phone control scheme as confusing compared with mouse and keyboard input.

### Paul Manzella and Samuel Lim

 Android

Test device**Phone models not disclosed** Android versions not disclosed

Test scope Named comments on the exact org.openttd.sdl app, dated October 30, 2025 and July 19, 2026; builds and play durations were not stated.

Manzella found tiny controls and a cursor hidden beneath his thumb troublesome. Lim found the management loop satisfying and the controls easy for his own use, showing that tolerance for this interface differs across players.

### foxtrella

[Read Android port device issue ↗](https://github.com/pelya/openttd-android/issues/31)

 Android

Test device**Samsung Galaxy S22** Android 15

Test scope July 23, 2025 issue report after a fresh store install of version 14.1.rev130; a short setup and railway-toolbar check, not a full play or performance test. Version: 14.1.rev130

The reporter showed that default UI scaling pushed a railway control into the phone's curved edge, making it difficult to select; changing the scale in settings worked around that device-specific problem.

### MadeInDutch

[Read Android save-import issue ↗](https://github.com/pelya/openttd-android/issues/30)

 Android

Test device**Phone model not disclosed** Android 14

Test scope May 4, 2025 GitHub issue about importing two PC saves into the Android port; the reporter cited version 14.1 and did not provide a device model or repeatable performance measurements. Version: 14.1

The reporter could load the saves on PCs but received an unreadable-file error on the phone. This documents a specific cross-device save problem, not general local-save failure or a confirmed cause.

Testing is credited to the named reviewers. GamesRanker reviewed their findings for this assessment.
