**If one mobile game keeps crashing, do not clear its data or reinstall it first. Record when the crash happens, confirm how the game saves your progress, then close and reopen the game, restart the phone, and install available game and system updates. Test after each change. Clear cache, offload, or reinstall only when you understand what will happen to the save.**

That order matters because a reinstall may repair damaged files, but it can also remove progress stored only on the device. [Apple warns that deleting an app might remove stored data](https://support.apple.com/en-us/119876), and Google’s Android troubleshooting page says uninstalling erases data saved in the app.

This is a research-based troubleshooting procedure using Apple, Google, Android, and Samsung support documentation checked September 13, 2026. Games Ranker did not diagnose your device. Menu names vary by phone model and software version.

## Identify what actually failed

“The game crashed” can describe several different failures. Watch the screen once before changing anything.

| What you see | What probably happened | First useful check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The game disappears and you return to the Home Screen | The app closed unexpectedly | Reopen it and note the exact screen or action that came before the close |
| The image stays visible but controls stop responding | The app froze | Wait briefly, then close and reopen it |
| A reconnect message or endless spinner appears | The game may still be running but cannot complete a network request | Check the service status and try one different stable network |
| The entire phone restarts or turns off | The failure is wider than one app session | Stop testing the game and use the phone maker’s restart or device-support guidance |

A disconnect is not automatically an app crash, and a phone restart should not be treated as a normal game bug. This distinction prevents unrelated fixes from being mixed together.

## Protect your game progress before resetting anything

Open the game long enough to check its account and save screen if you still can. Write down or capture:

*   the player ID, account name, and server or region;
*   the sign-in method and the partially hidden email address shown in the game;
*   the last visible sync time, save slot, or cloud icon;
*   the game version from its settings or title screen;
* any recovery code the game itself provides.

Do not record a password or payment number in a screenshot or support message.

Game Center or Google Play Games integration does not prove that every part of a save is online. [Google says only some games automatically save progress](https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/9275812?hl=en) and tells players to verify the account used by that game. [Apple describes cross-device progress as a feature of supported games](https://support.apple.com/en-us/101643), with the same Apple Account used for iCloud and Game Center.

If the game will not open, find its official support page before clearing storage or deleting it. Give the developer the player ID from an older screenshot, receipt, account email, or welcome message if you have one. When progress is local-only and the app cannot open, no general phone setting can guarantee that a reinstall will preserve it.

## Try the reversible fixes first

Use a short repeatable test, such as opening the same menu or loading the same save. Change one thing, test again, and stop once the game works.

1. **Close and reopen the game.** Apple puts this first for an app that freezes or closes unexpectedly. On Android, use the recent-apps screen or the game’s App info page to force stop it if necessary.
2. **Restart the phone or tablet.** A restart clears the current app process and temporary system state without deleting the game.
3. **Update the game.** Check the App Store or Google Play page directly. Automatic updates may not have installed the newest build yet.
4. **Update iOS, iPadOS, or Android.** Apple and Google both include system updates in their standard app troubleshooting order.
5. **Check free storage.** Installation, asset unpacking, and updates need working room. Our guide to [mobile game download size and storage use](/blog/why-mobile-games-need-more-storage-than-download-size/) explains how to inspect the real footprint without clearing a save blindly.
6. **Let a hot phone cool.** If the crash follows dimming, a severe frame-rate drop, a temperature warning, or charging trouble, stop and use the [safe phone-cooling steps for gaming](/blog/phone-gets-hot-while-gaming/).

If the failure appears only during sign-in, matchmaking, or a download, check the game’s official service-status or support page. Test one other network if practical. A network change is useful evidence; it is not proof that the phone or router caused the failure.

## On Android, clear cache before storage

Google’s general Android order is restart and update, force stop, clear cache or data, then uninstall if the problem remains. The dangerous part for a game is that many phones place **Clear cache** and **Clear storage** beside each other.

Go to **Settings > Apps**, choose the game, then open **Storage** or **Storage & cache**. The exact labels vary by manufacturer.

* **Clear cache** removes temporary files. The game may download or rebuild them again.
* **Clear storage** or **Clear data** resets the app and can remove local settings, downloads, sign-in state, and saves.

[Samsung’s current Galaxy instructions make the same distinction](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10001372/): clearing data returns the app to its initial state and removes personal settings or data. Use Clear storage only after confirming the save and sign-in method, or when you accept losing local progress.

Safe mode is useful when the **phone or several apps** keep crashing, because it temporarily disables downloaded apps and helps identify a wider conflict. [Android’s safe-mode instructions say the entry method depends on the manufacturer](https://support.google.com/android/answer/7665064?hl=en). It is excessive for one game that fails in one repeatable place while the rest of the phone works normally.

## On iPhone or iPad, try offloading before deleting

Apple’s app troubleshooting sequence is close and reopen, restart, check app and system updates, then delete and redownload. Protect the save before the delete step.

If you need a cleaner app installation but are not ready to delete its documents, open **Settings > General > iPhone Storage** or **iPad Storage**, select the game, and review **Offload App**. [Apple says offloading removes the app while keeping its documents and data](https://support.apple.com/en-us/108429). Reinstall the game from that same screen or its App Store page and repeat your test.

Offloading cannot repair every bad local file because it intentionally keeps documents and data. If the same save or downloaded asset is the trigger, the failure may return. Deleting the app is a more complete reset, but Apple says it removes the app and related data. Use it only after you have confirmed a cloud or account save, exported a save where supported, or decided the local progress is disposable.

## Let the crash pattern choose the next step

The timing of a crash is evidence. It does not identify the cause by itself, but it tells you which question to ask next.

| Repeatable pattern | Best next step |
| --- | --- |
| The crash began immediately after a game update and other apps work | Check the developer’s support page and current release notes before resetting the phone |
| One save, level, character, or downloaded pack always triggers it | Preserve the account details and report that exact content to the developer |
| The game runs until the phone becomes hot or performance drops sharply | Cool the phone, disconnect charging, and retest with lower frame rate or graphics |
| Several demanding games close, but light apps work | Check storage, system updates, heat, and the device’s supported requirements |
| Many unrelated apps fail or the phone restarts | Follow the manufacturer procedure for a device-wide problem; Android users may use model-specific safe mode guidance |
| The game works on another account or device | Tell support which account and device fail; do not erase the working copy |

Avoid a factory reset for a single crashing game. A reset removes far more data than the app-level steps and is useful only in a broader device investigation with a current backup and manufacturer guidance.

## Reinstall only when the save is accounted for

A reinstall becomes reasonable after reversible steps fail and one of these is true:

*   the game’s own account or cloud-save screen confirms current progress;
*   a second device shows the same up-to-date save;
*   the game supports a manual save export and you completed it;
*   the developer confirms that progress is attached to your player account;
* you accept starting again if the local save disappears.

Before uninstalling, note the exact store edition. Reinstall from the same official App Store or Google Play listing, sign in with the same platform and game account, and let required files finish downloading before judging the result. If the game offers several login buttons, choosing a different one can create a new profile that looks like lost progress.

## Send the developer a report they can reproduce

If one game still crashes while other apps work, both [Apple](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102435) and [Google Play](https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/113418?hl=en) direct players to the app developer. App Store listings expose **App Support**; Google Play listings expose an **App support** section.

A useful report includes:

*   game title, store edition, and version;
*   phone or tablet model and operating-system version;
*   the exact menu, save, level, or action before the crash;
*   whether it happens every time or only sometimes;
*   any visible error message;
*   available storage and whether the phone was hot or charging;
*   Wi-Fi or cellular use when the failure involves an online step;
*   the date the problem began and what updated just before it;
* player ID or account name, without your password.

Write the shortest set of steps that reproduces the problem. “Open save slot 2, enter the harbor, and tap Continue; the app returns to the Home Screen every time” is more useful than “the game is broken.”

If none of it works and the game is newly bought, the store clock is the next thing to check rather than the last: Google Play’s automatic return closes two hours after a paid-app purchase and its request window closes at 48, so read [what each store will and will not refund](/blog/mobile-game-refund-android-iphone/) before spending another evening on diagnostics.

The safe order is simple: identify the failure, protect the save, restart and update, test storage and heat only when the pattern points there, clear cache before data on Android, try offloading before deletion on iPhone or iPad, and reinstall only with a known recovery path. Games Ranker’s [review method](/how-we-rank/) separates mobile fit and performance because a strong game can still fail on a particular device or build. Check the dated compatibility notes in the [mobile game catalogue](/games/) before buying or downloading another demanding game.
