**Put ordinary +Mult Jokers to the left of ordinary XMult Jokers when both effects activate in the same scoring stage.** Adding to Mult before multiplying it usually produces more points. The qualification matters: some effects happen while playing cards score, so moving their Joker to the far right does not make them activate last.

This guide explains the basic ordering decision for mobile players. It uses published scoring demonstrations, official mobile documentation, and an original arithmetic example, rather than a GamesRanker gameplay test. Our [Balatro mobile review](/games/balatro/) covers the separate buying decision.

## Compare the same hand in both orders

Christine Choi’s [Destructoid scoring demonstrations](https://www.destructoid.com/how-to-order-jokers-in-balatro/) show how left-to-right Joker activation changes the result. To isolate that effect here, keep every number fixed and change only the order.

Imagine scoring has reached **120 Chips and 8 Mult**, with two ordinary Joker effects still to apply: **+12 Mult** and **X3 Mult**. These are illustrative values, not a claim about a particular captured run. Assume both effects activate, with no copying, special editions, or other scoring adjustments.

| Order from left to right | Mult calculation | Final score |
| --- | --- | --- |
| X3, then +12 | 8 × 3 + 12 = 36 | 120 × 36 = **4,320** |
| +12, then X3 | (8 + 12) × 3 = 60 | 120 × 60 = **7,200** |

The second arrangement earns **2,880 more points** without a stronger hand or a new purchase. In the first arrangement, the added 12 arrives too late to be tripled. In the second, it becomes 36, a gain of 24 Mult; 120 × 24 gives the difference.

Use the symbol in the description to distinguish the effects. **+3 Mult adds three; X3 Mult triples the current Mult.** Card color, rarity, or how dramatic an animation looks is not a substitute for reading that symbol.

## A chip-only Joker does not have to go first

Choi also demonstrates that an ordinary chip bonus can be moved independently of those Mult effects. It changes the Chips side of the final calculation.

Add a plain **+40 Chips** effect to our example. Whether it appears before, between, or after those two Mult effects, the Chips total becomes 160. The +12-then-X3 arrangement therefore scores **160 × 60 = 9,600** in all three positions, under the same assumptions.

Putting chip Jokers on the left can make your row easier to read. It is an organizational habit, not an extra scoring bonus. Reconsider that freedom when a Joker also has an edition bonus, depends on a neighboring card, or is the target of another effect.

## Check when the effect activates

The important question is **what event triggers this effect?** Krista McCay’s [scoring walkthrough at Pro Game Guides](https://progameguides.com/balatro/best-joker-order-in-balatro/) distinguishes effects during played-card scoring, cards held in hand, and the later Joker stage. Its examples also show why Joker editions matter.

Use this as a quick reading check:

| Description or situation | What to check before moving it |
| --- | --- |
| Adds or multiplies Mult in the ordinary Joker stage | Compare +Mult before XMult using the same hand and effect values |
| Triggers when a particular playing card scores | Check which played card triggers it; the Joker’s rightmost slot does not postpone that trigger until after ordinary Jokers |
| Depends on cards held in your hand | Inspect the cards you are keeping, as well as the Joker row |
| Copies another Joker or refers to a position | Read its target description again after rearranging the row |
| Has an edition such as Polychrome | Include the edition’s effect instead of treating the card as only its base ability |

A Joker with more than one relevant effect may not have one position that improves everything. Stop applying the simple two-effect example once its assumptions no longer match your row.

## Move Jokers carefully on a touchscreen

Make your arrangement **before pressing Play Hand**, when you can inspect the complete row. Drag the intended Joker into its new position within that row, then release and check that both the order and any position-dependent targets are what you intended.

Keep the drag away from the sell area. The [official iOS version history](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/balatro/id6502453075) specifically records moving that area farther right to reduce accidental sales. That is a useful reason to make deliberate moves on a phone instead of sweeping a card toward the edge of the screen.

Before committing, read the Boss Blind restriction too. The [official Balatro FAQ](https://www.playbalatro.com/faq) explains that bosses change the conditions of play. A tidy Joker row cannot compensate for an effect whose condition your selected hand does not meet.

For small-screen readability, inspect descriptions rather than relying only on artwork or suit color. In his [Android review](https://www.pocketgamer.com/balatro/review/), Iwan Morris found that clubs and spades could look similar at a glance. That observation matters when you are counting on a suit-specific effect.

## What this mobile check covers

On September 10, 2026, the paid US iOS listing showed **version 1.3**, with metadata-only release notes. The [paid Google Play listing](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.playstack.balatro.android&hl=en&gl=US) showed a September 7 update described as a compliance update; its public page did not expose an exact Android build number.

Those listings establish the mobile reference, not a fresh device test of every interaction. This guide covers arranging cards before a hand and understanding ordinary scoring. It does not promise that moving Jokers during an active scoring animation works identically across platforms, or that the simplified calculation handles every special deck and advanced combination.
